Notes on English
- Script
- Latin alphabet, written left to right
- Spelling variants
- American, British, Australian and other national spellings all exist; a transcript does not enforce one
- Typical sources
- Meetings, podcasts, lectures, interviews, voice memos and video
English is the language most people think of first when they need a transcript, and it covers more situations than any other page on this site. A quarterly planning call, a university lecture, a podcast interview, a sermon and a voice memo recorded in a car all arrive as English audio, and each puts different pressure on a transcript.
The main variable is not the language but the recording. Clean audio from a single speaker with a decent microphone is much easier than a conference-room call with five voices and an echo. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise, so the best way to improve results is to improve the recording: put the microphone close, ask speakers not to talk over each other, and avoid fans and keyboards.
English spelling varies between countries, and the transcript will not enforce a house style. Proper nouns, product names and acronyms are the usual corrections. The editor lets you fix a name once and apply the change across the whole file, and the timestamps beside each speaker turn let you verify a quote against the audio. If you need the result in another language, translation is available on Unlimited. Originals are deleted within 24 hours and are never used for training.
Questions
Does it handle different English accents?
English is spoken with enormous variety. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise, so review passages from strongly accented or overlapping speakers.
Can I choose British or American spelling?
Transcripts follow the spelling the model produces, which may vary. If your style requires one, apply find and replace in the editor before exporting.
What about filler words like 'um' and 'you know'?
A transcript records speech faithfully, so some fillers may remain. Remove them by hand if you want a clean-read version.
Can I translate an English transcript?
Translation is available on Unlimited. The original English transcript stays in your account alongside the translated version.
