Notes on Thai
- Script
- Thai script, 44 consonants plus vowel and tone marks
- Direction
- Left to right
- Word spacing
- No spaces between words; spaces mark phrases or sentences
- Tones
- Five tones that change word meaning
Thai is a tonal language written in its own script, and both facts affect how you work with a transcript. The tone is carried by marks above the letters, so a missing or wrong mark can produce a different word. When a passage looks off, replay it using its timestamp and compare.
Spacing is the other noticeable feature. Thai writes words one after another, and spaces appear only where a reader would pause. That means a transcript can seem to contain very long strings, which is correct. For subtitles, you will probably want to break long sentences into shorter lines, and the editor lets you do that before export.
Thai also adds polite particles and pronouns that depend on the speaker and the listener. They are part of what was said, so they appear in the draft. Remove them if you want a neutral text for publication.
Recordings often include classes, TV or YouTube content, customer calls and interviews. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise, and regional accents from the north, north-east and south can sound very different from Bangkok speech. Speaker labels keep multi-person files readable.
Questions
Why does the Thai transcript have so few spaces?
Thai is written without spaces between words and uses a space for a pause or sentence break. That matches normal Thai writing. Edit the line breaks if your subtitles need shorter lines.
Are polite particles kept?
Particles such as ครับ and ค่ะ appear as spoken. Delete them in the editor if your final text should be neutral.
Can I subtitle a Thai video?
Yes. Transcribe the video and export SRT or VTT. Because there are no spaces, check line breaks in your player.
How does it handle English words in Thai speech?
Thai speech often includes English terms. They may be written in Thai script or Latin, so settle on one convention after the first pass.
