Frequent switching with Spanish in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands

Catalan is spoken across Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Andorra and parts of southern France and Sardinia. A transcript needs to cope with several regional varieties that share a written standard, and with the constant, natural mixing of Catalan and Spanish that bilingual speakers use in conversation.

The mixing is the thing to plan for. A radio panel from Barcelona might run mostly in Catalan with Spanish quotations, and a classroom recording in Valencia could move between the two several times a minute. The first transcript is a good record of what was said, and the editor lets you correct the passages where the boundary was unclear. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise, and fast, overlapping discussion is the hardest case.

Catalan spelling has a few distinctive features that deserve a look: the middle dot in words like 'col·legi', the apostrophe in contractions such as 'l'hora', and the open and closed accents. Because every line has a timestamp and speaker label, correcting a repeated word is quick. When the text is ready, export DOCX for sharing or SRT and VTT for video. Originals are deleted within 24 hours and never used for training.

Questions

Does it handle Valencian?

Valencian is a variety of Catalan, and the same page applies. Spelling and word choice may differ from the Barcelona standard, so review them in the editor.

What happens when speakers switch between Catalan and Spanish?

Mixed speech is harder than single-language audio. Spanish passages may come out spelled as Catalan or the other way round, so listen back at the switch points.

Are the middle dot and apostrophes preserved?

The transcript uses Catalan spelling conventions where recognised. Check words such as 'col·legi' once in the editor, then use find and replace.

Can I turn a Catalan lecture into notes?

Yes. AI notes can summarise the transcript, and you can edit them before exporting.
