Notes on Hungarian

Script
Latin alphabet with á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü and ű
Name order
Family name comes first, so 'Nagy Anna' is Anna Nagy
Grammar
Agglutinative, with about eighteen cases and vowel harmony

Hungarian is unrelated to its Slavic, Germanic and Romance neighbours and belongs to the Uralic family with Finnish and Estonian. Its grammar attaches suffixes to a stem and changes them to match the vowels in the word, so a single noun can take many different forms. That is why a small mistake in a single vowel can make a transcript look wrong to a native reader.

The alphabet adds another layer. Hungarian distinguishes short and long vowels with accents and double accents, and distinguishes short and long consonants by doubling. The pairs ö and ő, or ü and ű, are easily mistaken in names. The editor keeps the full set, so the main task is a short proofreading pass, particularly on surnames and place names.

Hungarian recordings often come from lectures, parliamentary debate, podcasts and interviews with people from the Hungarian-speaking communities in Transylvania, Slovakia and Serbia. Local vocabulary and accent differ from Budapest speech. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise. Because names appear with the family name first, agree on a single convention for your document. Timestamps and speaker labels sit on every turn for easy checks. Originals are deleted within 24 hours and are never used for training.

Questions

Does it distinguish ö from ő and ü from ű?

Yes, the long double-acute forms are part of the alphabet. Because they are easy to confuse in names, check proper nouns in review.

How are names written in a transcript?

Hungarian puts the family name first. The transcript follows what is said, so decide on one order for your document and fix it with find and replace.

Can it transcribe Hungarian spoken in Romania or Slovakia?

Hungarian is also spoken in neighbouring countries, with local words and accents. Accuracy varies with accents, so review those recordings carefully.

Are long consonants preserved?

Yes, double letters are part of standard spelling. The editor lets you compare them with the audio.
