Turn M4A into text

  1. Find the M4A. On an iPhone, share the voice memo to Files or to your computer first.
  2. Upload the file in your browser and pick the spoken language.
  3. Review the transcript against the audio and fix names and numbers.
  4. Export the transcript in the format you need.

About M4A files

What it is
An MPEG-4 audio container. The audio inside is usually AAC (lossy), though it can be Apple Lossless.
Typical source
Apple Voice Memos, GarageBand exports, QuickTime audio recordings and many Android recorder apps.
Contains video?
No. M4A is audio only. A file with the same structure and video inside is normally .mp4.
Maximum file size
Up to 5 GB per file.
Free plan length
Free files longer than 30 minutes are cut: only the first 30 minutes are transcribed.

M4A is what Apple devices produce when you press record. Voice Memos on iPhone, audio notes from a Mac and many exported GarageBand sessions all arrive as .m4a, which is why this format turns up so often in personal workflows: a student recording a lecture, a journalist taping a quick interview, someone talking through an idea on a walk.

The name causes some confusion, because M4A is a container rather than a codec. Inside it, the audio is normally AAC, a lossy codec built for efficient speech and music. Some files hold Apple Lossless instead. For transcription the difference is small; what you should check is whether the voices are close enough to the microphone to be heard clearly.

From phone to transcript

The slowest part of an M4A workflow is usually getting the file off the phone. Share the memo to Files, AirDrop it to a Mac, or email it to yourself, then upload from the browser. Recordings made in a quiet room at arm's length transcribe more cleanly than ones made in a bag or a moving car.

Questions

Can I transcribe an iPhone Voice Memo?

Yes. Voice Memos are saved as M4A. Share the memo to the Files app or send it to your computer, then upload it.

Is M4A better than MP3 for transcription?

Neither is better by itself. Both are compressed, and the microphone and room matter far more than the container.

My M4A is lossless. Is that a problem?

No. Lossless M4A files are larger but upload like any other file, up to 5 GB.

Can I upload several memos at once?

Unlimited accepts up to 50 files in one upload. Free accepts one at a time.

Are my voice memos used to train anything?

No. Originals are deleted within 24 hours of processing and your files are never used for training.
