About OGG / Opus files
- What it is
- Ogg is an open container. Inside, the audio is Vorbis or Opus, both lossy codecs. Opus is designed for speech and low delay.
- Typical source
- Voice messages from some chat apps, VoIP recordings, game and community tools, and Linux recorders.
- Extensions
- Files appear as .ogg, .oga or .opus. They may be the same codec under different names.
- Maximum file size
- Up to 5 GB per file.
- Free plan length
- Free files longer than 30 minutes are cut: only the first 30 minutes are transcribed.
The OGG family is less familiar than MP3 but more common than it looks. Many chat and voice apps use Opus, the codec at its heart, for voice messages, because it keeps speech intelligible at small sizes. When someone forwards you a ten minute voice note and you would rather read it, an Ogg or Opus file is often what you hold.
Naming adds some confusion. Ogg is the container; Vorbis and Opus are what is stored inside. The same recording might be named .ogg, .oga or .opus depending on the app. Scribewren treats them alike, so what matters is that the file plays in an ordinary player before you upload it.
Saving a voice note properly
Chat apps do not always make it obvious how to save a voice note as a file. Look for a share or export option and send it to your own files, not to another chat. Keep the original rather than converting it to MP3, since converting a lossy file to another lossy format only adds noise.
Questions
Can I transcribe a WhatsApp or Telegram voice note?
Voice notes from messaging apps are commonly Opus audio in an Ogg file. Export or save the note from the app, then upload it. Check that the saved file keeps its extension.
What is the difference between OGG and Opus?
Ogg is the container; Opus and Vorbis are codecs that can live inside it. Many .opus files are Opus in an Ogg container.
Is Opus good enough for transcription?
Opus was built for speech, so voice notes are usually clear. As always, accuracy depends on the microphone, the room and the accent.
Can I upload many voice notes together?
Unlimited accepts up to 50 files at once. Free accepts one at a time.
Are voice notes private?
Originals are deleted within 24 hours of processing and are never used for training.
