Notes on Urdu

Script
Perso-Arabic script, usually in the Nastaliq style when printed
Direction
Right to left; digits and Latin words run left to right inside the line
Relationship to Hindi
Spoken Urdu and Hindi are closely related but written in different scripts
Vocabulary
Persian and Arabic loanwords in formal speech

Urdu is written from right to left in a script borrowed from Persian and extended with extra letters. The transcript follows this direction, with numerals and embedded Latin words keeping their own left-to-right order inside the line. If you see odd punctuation placement after exporting, it usually comes from the application you opened the file in rather than from the transcript, so check it in a modern word processor.

The relationship with Hindi is the thing most people ask about. In everyday speech the two languages are very close, and a listener may not be able to tell them apart. The difference is mostly in script and in formal vocabulary: Urdu leans on Persian and Arabic words, Hindi on Sanskrit ones. Choose the language whose script you need.

Typical recordings include news and talk programmes, lectures, interviews with community members, call-centre and business conversations, and family voice notes in Pakistan, India and the diaspora. English words enter speech freely, and place and personal names can have several valid spellings, so a quick read-through is worthwhile.

Speaker labels keep conversations clear. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise.
