Notes on Hindi
- Script
- Devanagari, written left to right with a connecting top line
- Sentence end
- Hindi uses the danda (।) as a full stop
- Code-switching
- 'Hinglish', a mix of Hindi and English, is very common in business and media
Hindi is written in Devanagari, an alphabet where letters hang from a continuous top line and vowel signs attach above, below and around consonants. The editor displays this correctly, and sentences end with the danda mark rather than a full stop. If your readers also use Latin-script Hindi in chat, note that a transcript follows the standard Devanagari spelling.
Most real-world Hindi audio is not pure Hindi. Business calls, campus conversations and YouTube videos mix in English words, technical terms and sometimes whole sentences. A good workflow is to run the file, read the result against the audio and settle on a rule for English terms: either keep them in Latin letters or transliterate them into Devanagari, then apply it with find and replace. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise.
Spoken Hindi and Urdu overlap, and many everyday words are shared. They are still separate in script and in formal vocabulary, so choose the page that matches the speaker's language. For interviews and oral histories, speaker labels and timestamps let you quote with confidence. For video, export SRT or VTT. Originals are deleted within 24 hours and are never used for training.
Questions
Will the transcript be in Devanagari or Latin letters?
Hindi is transcribed in Devanagari. English words inside Hindi speech may appear in Latin letters or in Devanagari, so standardise them in the editor.
How does it deal with Hinglish?
Mixed speech is harder than single-language audio. Check the switch points against the audio, especially technical terms.
Is Urdu the same as Hindi?
Spoken Hindi and Urdu overlap heavily, but they use different scripts and vocabulary. Use the Urdu page for Urdu speakers.
What about regional accents?
Hindi is spoken across a large area with distinct accents. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise.
