Notes on Russian

- Cyrillic, 33 letters
- Direction
- Left to right
- Spelling trap
- The letter ё is usually printed as е
- Stress
- Unmarked in normal text and shifts word meaning
Russian is spoken well beyond Russia: in Kazakhstan, Belarus, the Baltic states, Israel, Germany and many diaspora communities. A single research project can therefore include speakers with noticeably different accents, which is useful to know when you set expectations for a transcript.
Russian vowels are reduced when unstressed, so written words and pronounced words can feel far apart. A fast speaker may slur a long word into a few syllables. The transcript gives you a draft, and the timestamps make it quick to replay a doubtful passage.
Writing conventions need a decision from you. The letter ё is almost always printed as е, which is fine for most uses; foreign names and place names can be transliterated in several ways; and quotation marks may be « » or standard quotes depending on your house style. Because the transcript is editable, these choices stay in your hands.
Common files are interviews for journalism and research, university lectures, meeting recordings and video for subtitles. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise. For video, export SRT or VTT; for sharing, export DOCX or PDF.
Questions
Does the transcript write ё or е?
Russian publishing normally uses е for both. If you need ё, for names or learners, add it in the editor.
How are Russian and Ukrainian handled if a speaker mixes them?
Surzhyk, a blend of the two, is common in some regions. Pick the main language of the file and check mixed sections by hand.
Can I transcribe Russian interviews with several speakers?
Yes. Speaker labels separate voices, and you can rename them in the editor. Overlapping talk lowers quality.
Are English technical terms transliterated?
Russian speakers often borrow English terms and may write them in Cyrillic or Latin. Choose a convention and apply it with find and replace.
