Notes on Croatian
- Script
- Latin alphabet with č, ć, đ, š, ž and the digraphs dž, lj and nj
- Dialect groups
- Standard speech is Štokavian; Kajkavian (Zagreb region) and Čakavian (coast and islands) are widely heard
- Neighbours
- Close to Bosnian, Serbian and Montenegrin; Slovene is related but not mutually intelligible in the same way
Croatian recordings come from a country with unusually strong regional speech. The standard language is based on Štokavian, yet in Zagreb and the north you will hear Kajkavian, and along the Adriatic and on the islands Čakavian, each with its own vocabulary and sounds. News broadcasts and lectures stay close to the standard, while interviews with older speakers or recordings from a village market can drift well away from it.
For a transcript this means two habits. Use the standard-speech passages as a baseline and expect to spend more time on strongly regional ones. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise, and the combination of a dialect, a bad microphone and an outdoor setting is the most difficult case.
Croatian spelling has several characters that people miss in a rush: č, ć, đ, š, ž and the digraphs lj, nj and dž. The editor keeps them, and a timestamped line makes it easy to compare what you hear with what is written. Names of people and places deserve a quick pass. Once it reads correctly, export DOCX or PDF for documents or SRT and VTT for subtitles. Originals are deleted within 24 hours and are never used for training.
Questions
Are Kajkavian and Čakavian speakers understood?
Standard Croatian is the safest input. Speakers using strong Kajkavian or Čakavian forms may produce more errors, so review those passages carefully.
Does it recognise the digraphs lj, nj and dž?
Yes, they are part of the Croatian spelling system. If a name is split incorrectly, fix it once and use find and replace.
What about tourism and coastal recordings with many languages?
Croatian audio often includes German, Italian or English guests. Mixed-language segments are harder, so listen back at the switches.
