Notes on Dutch
- Script
- Latin alphabet; the digraph 'ij' is often treated as one letter
- Varieties
- Netherlands Dutch and Belgian (Flemish) Dutch, plus Surinamese Dutch
- Word formation
- Long compound nouns are written as a single word
Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands, in Flanders, and in Suriname and the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom. Recordings from these places differ in accent and in everyday vocabulary, and a Flemish radio programme and a Rotterdam podcast do not sound alike. Accuracy varies with audio quality, accents and background noise, so allow extra review time for strongly regional speech.
Where Dutch recordings usually need attention is not grammar but compounding and borrowing. The language builds long single-word compounds, and a transcript may separate them where a style guide would join them. Business conversations are full of English terms, sometimes with Dutch verb endings added, and project names or product names can show up spelled in unexpected ways. A short find-and-replace pass handles most of this.
Dutch interview recordings are common in academic research, journalism and local government. If you are interviewing several people, speaker labels and timestamps keep quotes easy to attribute and verify. Export DOCX for coding in a qualitative tool, or SRT and VTT for subtitled video. Your originals are deleted within 24 hours and are never used for training.
Questions
Does it work for Flemish speakers?
Flemish is Dutch as spoken in Belgium, so the same language applies. Vocabulary and pronunciation differ, so give those recordings a careful review.
How are English loanwords handled?
Dutch business and tech speech often includes English words. They appear in English spelling, and you can unify them with find and replace.
Can I use it for a Frisian interview?
Frisian is a separate language and is not part of the launch languages. Mixed Dutch and Frisian audio will be harder to transcribe.
Do compound words get joined correctly?
Usually, but you should check long compounds and company names against your style guide.
